On April 13-14, 2012, the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures and other units at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will host a two-day symposium whose speakers focus on current research in German studies, including work on literature, history, and visual culture. Established at the University of Missouri-Columbia, the Midwest Symposium in German Studies has emerged as a vibrant forum for intellectual exchange in the Midwest. It is now an established event attracting scholars from the entire region. This second year at Illinois, the procedure of hosting a number of speakers and guest discussants from various Midwestern universities will continue. The April 2012 symposium will include talks by Robert Norton (University of Notre Dame), Brigitta Wagner (Indiana University), Craig Koslofsky (University of Illinois), Stephanie Hilger (University of Illinois), Brad Prager (University of Missouri), Ben Robinson (Indiana University), Stefani Engelstein (University of Missouri), and Sara Hall (University of Illinois at Chicago). A number of guest discussants from each institution and from other universities (including Washington University, Case Western Reserve, and the University of Illinois-Chicago) also will attend. We look forward to participating in sessions full of constructive feedback on our ongoing research, becoming better acquainted with one another, and developing ideas for collaborative initiatives of benefit to all of our institutions.
The symposium has no single theme; rather, colleagues share their most current research. We have discovered that this results in a strikingly coherent and exciting exchange, wherein we establish common research bonds but also discover our differences in a highly productive manner.
A complete program for this year's Midwest Symposium in German Studies is now available on this site at the link above. The event will take place at the Levis Faculty Center on the campus of the University of Illinois. The symposium hotel is the I-Hotel in Champaign.
This event is supported by the generosity of the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures, the School of Literatures, Cultures, and Linguistics, the Center for Advanced Study, the Department of History, the Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory, and the European Union Center.
